Stop throwing new compressors at every no-cool call

I keep seeing guys swap a compressor on a fridge that's just got a bad start relay or a dirty condenser coil. Last week I fixed a Whirlpool that had three previous techs replace parts they didn't test. Stick a meter on it first or you're just guessing.

I actually read an article last week from some old electrical forum where a guy said his grandpa fixed everything with a butter knife and a prayer... handed him a meter once and he just stared at it like it was a alien artifact. They had this whole thing about how older folks grew up without complex tools so they rely on feel and sound more than numbers. Makes me wonder if handing them a meter is almost like speaking a different language to them... they can see the voltage but they don't always know what to do with it. Still, I'd probably try it just to see the look on their face.
