The CFO who called our retainer a 'donation' changed how I pitch
At a Q2 review in Austin, the client CFO said our retainer was basically charity because our partner barely touched the strategy deck. I still disagree with billing purely on output, since half the value was steering them off two bad hires, but it made me realize I need to sell the invisible work up front. Has anyone else hit a client who only pays for artifacts, not advice?

Different game entirely when CFOs value paper over prevention, but I once had one who timed my calls to the second.
