Had a partner tell me straight up that my referral fee was too low

It was during a coffee meeting at a WeWork in Austin last spring. This other agency owner flat out said my 10% referral fee felt like a joke and he'd rather keep leads for himself. I asked him what he thought was fair and he said 20% with a minimum of $500 per qualified lead. That one talk made me totally rethink how I structure partnerships. I started offering tiered fees based on deal size after that. Has anyone else had a partner call them out on pricing like that?

Guys, come on. "Wild" is a bit of a strong word for someone being upfront about their rates. If the referral fee was genuinely too low for the quality and effort required, he was doing you a favor by being honest instead of just silently taking the leads elsewhere.

Starting at 15% with a $300 minimum changed everything for me, and I agree with @kai914 that honesty like that is a gift.

10 percent in Austin for a WeWork coffee meeting is wild.
