That tip about pointing gutters downhill saved my foundation

My neighbor Bob told me to pitch my gutters at least a quarter inch per foot toward the downspout and after last week's monsoon I checked and found no standing water or overflow for the first time in three years, so what's the one maintenance trick you got from a neighbor that actually worked?

My neighbor Harold taught me to wrap my outdoor faucets in those foam covers before the first freeze, saved me three hundred bucks in pipe repairs that first winter. @the_sam is right about water being the enemy, I found out the hard way when my basement flooded two years ago. Funny how much you can learn from just watching what the old-timers around here do with their houses.

Funny how most home maintenance boils down to giving water a clear path away from things.
