Just back from a country visit... barn wood oils can seep and spoil your finish... be careful.

Remember grabbing some old barn siding for a shelf project. Left it in my garage for a week and the wood left this greasy, rainbow-looking stain on the plywood underneath. Totally forgot how much random gunk gets soaked into that stuff over decades.

What do you think was in that old wood?

Watched my friend get totally wrecked by some old fencing wood last summer. He built this really nice planter box with it and I guess the wood was just full of old oils or something. Within a month the whole finish got all cloudy and tacky, and these weird rainbow spots bled through the paint. Idk, maybe it's just me but that stuff can be way more trouble than it's worth if you don't know what you're getting into.
