I've stopped feeling guilty about eating meat from nearby farms after seeing the miles on my vegan friend's groceries.

That's an interesting point about food miles... but the thing is, raising animals for meat uses way more land and water than growing plants, even locally. So the total impact is usually still a lot higher for that steak from down the road compared to beans or tofu shipped from farther away. The miles on the truck are just one small part of the whole picture.
