My writing group buddy in Austin said my main character sounds like a 'sentient spreadsheet' and now I can't unsee it

What's wrong with a character who's organized and logical? I mean, that sounds like a solid foundation to build from. Maybe your buddy just doesn't get that type of person.

Exactly, @caleb_stone, those traits can make a character's growth even cooler when their logic gets tested.

My friend Dave wrote this detective who planned everything down to the minute. It felt real because Dave's a total spreadsheet guy in real life. The cool part was watching that character's whole system fall apart when the case got personal. He had to learn to trust gut feelings over cold facts. That struggle made him way more interesting than if he'd just been smart the whole time.
