Warning: my kombucha scoby grew a weird little hat

I left a batch of green tea kombucha brewing in my pantry for like 8 days, which is a bit long for me. When I checked it, the scoby had grown this perfect, tiny, mushroom-shaped lump right on top, maybe an inch tall. It looked like a little alien monument, lmao. I guess the extra time and the cooler spot let it do something funky. Has anyone else's culture ever decided to build a sculpture?

Your kombucha is trying to communicate. It's building a tiny monument to its kombucha gods.

Remember my friend's scoby grew a whole weird tower once, like a little lumpy castle. She left it in a cold corner for two weeks and it just went wild. It looked like a tiny sandcastle made of rubber, honestly kind of cool but also gross. Totally agree with @terry_thomas about it trying to talk, maybe hers was building a fortress. She just peeled it off and the brew underneath was fine, just really strong. Those cultures get creative when you forget about them.

That's actually just a new scoby forming on top. They layer up like that when the brew gets vinegary, which happens if you forget it. It's totally normal, not the culture getting creative or anything.
