Tried a new forge welding technique from a YouTube video and got a perfect billet on my first try

Used a borax substitute from an old timer's recipe and the damascus pattern came out cleaner than anything I've done before, has anyone else had luck skipping the standard flux?

Borax substitute won't give you a real forge weld though.

Actually, you can get a decent forge weld with borax substitutes like boric acid or white flux. It just takes more practice and the right conditions to get it to stick.

Three failed attempts with substitutes taught me the same lesson, @carr.brooke.
