I know everyone says to use a fresh rasp for every horse, but I tried something different on a tough quarter horse last week.
His hoof wall was super hard and my rasp was just skidding, so I took an old one I keep for rough work and put a slight curve on the edge with my grinder, just a little bend. It grabbed way better and saved me a ton of time on that one job. Has anyone else messed with reshaping an old tool for a specific problem like that?

Yo that's smart! I totally get the skidding thing, it's the worst. I once used a worn-out rasp to score a line for a tricky trim, worked like a charm.

You put a CURVE on a rasp with a grinder? That is some serious next-level garage shop stuff right there. I would be so scared of wrecking the temper and making it useless.

Paul346, the temper worry is real. But a light touch with the grinder and keeping it cool works fine. Dipping it in water every few seconds stops it from getting too hot. It's more about control than brute force. A curved rasp just fits the hand better for certain jobs. Lets you follow a shape without fighting the tool.
