My neighbor in Tucson swore by using vinegar to clean his coffee maker.
He said it would remove all the scale and make it run like new, so I tried it last Tuesday. The smell was so strong it made my whole kitchen unusable for hours, and now my coffee tastes like pickles. What's a better way to clean a machine without ruining the next ten pots?

Oh man, the pickle coffee thing is real. I used to be all about the vinegar method too, until I had the same disaster. That smell just sticks around forever. Now I use citric acid powder, the kind for canning. You mix a spoonful with water and run it through a cycle. It gets rid of the scale without any smell at all. After that, you just run a couple cycles of plain water to rinse it out. Have you ever tried something like that?

Read somewhere that citric acid is way better than vinegar, like @victorb74 was asking about. I mean it cleans just as well without the whole kitchen smelling like a salad. Maybe it's just me but I'm never going back to the old way.

Lol, pickle coffee is the worst. @phoenix331, where do you even get citric acid powder? Just like, the grocery store?
