Aluminum foil WiFi booster totally cut my internet off

I used to believe foil could boost my WiFi like everyone online says. Tried it by molding a sheet around the router antenna. My internet died completely within minutes. The foil just blocked all the signals instead of focusing them. Why would anyone think this works?

That foil trick only works if you shape it into a parabola behind the antenna, not wrapped around it. It’s super easy to block the signal instead of directing it. What shape did you try to make?

Remember when people used to wrap their TV remotes in foil to try and fix the batteries? I saw my uncle do that for years, convinced it made the signal stronger. He'd get so mad when it just made the remote stop working entirely. It feels like the same kind of old-school hack that never really pans out.

A tech friend warned me foil can block signals if placed wrong.
