Unpopular opinion: The maze of medical billing is no accident

I always thought medical bills were just complicated, but last month I had a wake-up call. I got a bill for a simple cavity filling that was three times what I expected. When I called to ask why, they gave me a RUNAROUND about codes and deductibles. It took HOURS on the phone, and I still didn't get a straight answer. I realized they make it hard on purpose so people just pay up. Now I see why everyone HATES talking about money stuff like this. It's designed to make you feel SMALL and confused. I'm starting to speak up more, but it's exhausting.

Ugh, this is so true and it goes way beyond medical bills. Think about cell phone plans with all their hidden fees, or the fine print on bank accounts. They design these systems to be confusing on purpose so you just give up and pay. It happens with insurance, cable companies, even some subscription services. When was the last time you actually understood every charge on your bill?

Wait WHAT, they actually call it a "regulatory cost recovery fee" on my phone bill. That sounds like a totally made up thing they just invented to charge me extra. It's literally a fee for paying a fee. You're right, it's all designed to be nonsense so you just ignore the extra five or ten bucks. How is that even legal?

Wait, they seriously charge a fee for paying a fee, @brian_coleman? That's insane!
