My sister's wedding showed me how weird family money stuff gets

At her reception in Chicago last month, my dad gave a toast and casually mentioned covering the whole open bar, like 5 grand. My mom looked shocked and later told me they'd agreed to split it. Now I see why they argue about cash in whispers. I never realized how much hidden money tension there is, even at happy events. Has anyone else had a family moment where the real money situation suddenly became clear?

That "hidden money tension" you saw just seems like normal family stuff to me. My parents have little spats like that all the time, it doesn't mean there's some big secret problem. Sometimes a dad just wants to look generous at a toast.

Oh man, that's not just a little spat, that's a broken money promise.

Look past the little spats to the bigger pattern. My folks had those same quiet fights for years before we found out about a second mortgage. It starts with a toast and ends with real secrets.
