Finally told my sister I can't lend her money anymore

Last month, she asked for $200 to cover a vet bill, which would have been the third time this year. I was in my kitchen in Austin, just staring at my phone, and I typed out 'I'm sorry, I can't right now' and hit send. My hands were actually shaking. It felt SO mean, but my own savings were down to almost nothing. She just replied 'okay' and we haven't talked about it since. It's this huge unspoken thing now. Has anyone else had to set a hard line with family over money?

Know exactly how that feels, setting that boundary is tough but needed. That quiet "okay" probably means she gets it, even if it's awkward now. Good on you for protecting your own finances.

Okay" is a win, that silence means she heard you.

Seriously, "okay" is the best response you could hope for. I had to do the same with my cousin last year, and the quiet after is just them processing the new rule. It gets easier once that first line is set.
