A client's simple question about her skin completely changed my approach to consultations

During a facial in my old treatment room, a regular looked at me and asked, 'But what does this ingredient actually do for my specific redness?' I realized I was just listing product features, not connecting them to her personal goals. How do you make sure your advice is truly client-focused?

Honestly, I've always found that listing what the ingredients do is the client-focused part! People come to me for my knowledge, so I'm giving them the facts to understand their skin better.

Lol my friend got so confused when her derm just threw chemical names at her. She needed the "why it works for her" part to actually get it.

People come to me for my knowledge" - right, like they want a wiki article read at them while they're sitting there with a sheet mask on. I get that we need to know the science, but I've seen bartenders who can list every hop in an IPA without ever asking if you like bitter beer. That's not helpful, that's just showing off. Maybe try saying "this will calm that red patch because the oat extract is basically a gentle hug for angry skin" instead of "this contains avena sativa with anti-inflammatory flavonoids." One of those actually changes behavior, the other makes people nod and forget everything the second they walk out the door.
