Unpopular opinion: I totally wrecked a phone board with too much heat but now my solder joints are perfect.
That one messed up repair taught me more about temperature control than any guide ever did.

Burned a board myself once trying to fix an Xbox. It was totally fried from holding the iron too long. Now I always use the lowest heat that gets the job done, like around 300 degrees for most small stuff. I practice on broken gadgets from thrift stores first to get a feel for it. That way I don't ruin anything I care about. Messing up that one time made me respect the tool way more.
