I used cheap power strips for years until one sparked behind my TV. Now I buy ones with safety certifications, even if they cost a few dollars more. I also make a point to not overload outlets, which is a free fix. Regularly checking cords for damage became part of my routine. It's a small effort that really cuts down the risk.

Witnessed my neighbor's outdoor junction box after their "quick fix." No cover, wires just hanging out in the rain. Used to think a little DIY wiring was no big deal. That changed my whole view. Seeing the actual physical danger right there, the exposed copper, it’s not about codes. It’s about stopping a disaster waiting to happen.
