A homeowner in Austin asked me why we still use copper

He was watching me run a new circuit and genuinely wanted to know if aluminum was better now. I explained the whole fire risk history with old connections, and he just nodded and said 'so it's about the hands, not just the metal.' Makes you think, how do you guys explain material choices to clients?

That guy gets it. The metal is only as good as the person putting it in. Aluminum needs perfect prep and torque, and most places just don't train for that anymore. Copper is more forgiving for the average electrician doing a hundred terminations a day. It's not about better or worse, it's about what works reliably with real world labor.

Honestly, that homeowner nailed it. It's all about the install. Good copper work beats sloppy aluminum any day.

So we're all just accepting that most installs are sloppy now? Guess I'll start budgeting for the "aluminum special" house fire upgrade.
