Took 6 months to realize I was using my putty knife backwards on drywall

I patched a hole in my hallway for the 6th time and sanded it down again, then my buddy watched me and asked why I was flexing the blade the wrong way. Turns out the bendy side is supposed to face you for spreading, not scraping, so my 'fixes' were always lumpy and I just kept adding more layers. Anyone else been doing a basic tool wrong forever and only caught it by accident?

And here I thought the flat side was the only side that mattered. My first few patches looked like melted marshmallows too, so at least you figured it out quicker than I did. The angle really is everything, but honestly half the battle is just not giving up and sanding your mistakes away.
