Heard a contractor in Omaha talk about mixing joint compound with a paint mixer

I was grabbing mud at the supply house and a guy was telling his helper to always use a drill with a paint mixer paddle, not just a stick. He said it cuts his mixing time down to about 2 minutes and gets rid of all the lumps. I tried it on a job this week and it made a huge difference, the mud was way smoother. Anyone else use a specific tool for mixing their mud?

That method can whip too much air into it though.

A friend of mine tried it once and ended up with foam so stiff you could spread it like butter. She learned her lesson the hard way, just like @ellis.hayden mentioned, it is possible to overdo it with all that air. Took her three tries to get it right.
