Half my basement ceiling came down when I tried to hang drywall without locating the joists first

I was up on the ladder in my utility room around 11 PM last Tuesday, screwed the first sheet right into what I thought was a joist, and the whole thing ripped loose taking a chunk of old plaster with it, has anyone else had to patch a ceiling they weren't even planning to touch?

Actually, setting compound will sag worse than premixed if you put it on thick, you need lightweight joint compound instead.

Oh man, I've been there lol. That sound of plaster ripping is just awful, especially when you're already tired from working late. You really gotta get a stud finder or at least knock on the ceiling first to hear where the solid spots are. For the patch job, grab some drywall screws and a piece of scrap wood to brace behind the hole, then mud over it with a good setting compound. Don't use the pre-mixed stuff for this, it'll take forever to dry and sag on you. I'd also check the joists in the other half of the room before you hang anything else, trust me it beats patching more holes later.

Yeah pre-mixed mud is useless for that.
