My ugly patch of dirt turned into a real lawn after 6 weeks of proper watering
I stopped just sprinkling the hose for 5 minutes and started doing deep soaks twice a week before sunrise, and the difference in root depth is insane how did I not figure this out sooner anyone else struggle with getting grass to actually take?

@torres.sage youre right id forget too but alicew68s timer idea really worked for me.

Did you try doing it with a timer? I had the same problem for years where I'd either forget or overwater cause I'd just eyeball it. What finally clicked for me was setting up one of those cheap battery timers on the faucet. I water at 5am for 25 minutes on the front and 20 on the back, only three days a week. The roots went down way deeper after that first month and now the grass barely wilts even when it's 90 out. The timer cost like 30 bucks at the hardware store and it saved me from having to think about it at all.
