That time the power went out for 3 days in Austin taught me to stop storing canned beans in the garage

When the heatwave hit last August and my garage hit 110 degrees, I found 4 swollen cans of beans that could have exploded and made a huge mess, plus had to eat cold soup for days because I never thought to grab a camp stove from the thrift store down the street - anyone else learn the hard way that storing food in a hot space is just asking for trouble?

Oh man, I gotta disagree here. I mean yeah a garage hitting 110 is rough but that's a pretty extreme situation most folks don't have to deal with. I've been keeping canned goods in my unheated garage for years and never had a problem, even through some hot summers. The key is just rotating your stock and checking dates every few months. Cans are tough, they're made to sit on shelves at room temp not in a blast furnace. And honestly having a backup camp stove is smart but not everyone has space or money for that stuff. I keep my beans in the basement where it stays cool and dark, works fine.

Right because my garage is basically a convection oven in July but sure, let me just trust the can of beans I bought during the Obama administration.

Garage canning is fine if you're not literally cooking the food.
