My neighbor swore by Mrs. Meyer's for years until I showed him the degreaser test
Last Saturday I was washing dishes at a cookout at my buddy's place. He handed me a bottle of Mrs. Meyer's lavender and said it was all he uses now. I grabbed a greasy baking sheet and put a drop of his soap on one side and some Dawn on the other. After 30 seconds his side still had a film and the Dawn side was clean. He just stared at it and said 'well I'll be damned.' Has anyone else done a side by side test like that?

Oh man, I actually did this exact same thing but with a twist nobody talks about (and it's kind of gross). I tested them on the greasy residue that builds up on the back of the stove, you know, that sticky yellow gunk. Dawn cut through it in maybe 20 seconds. Mrs. Meyer's just smeared it around like it was trying to make art. But here's the thing I noticed - the Meyer's actually left this weird waxy coating behind on the stainless steel. I had to wipe it twice with a wet rag to get rid of the haze. Dawn just rinsed clean and left nothing. So yeah, all those nice smelling soaps are basically just fancy detergents that can't handle real grease.

Wait, are you sure the waxy coating is from the soap itself and not just the oils in the scent? I've used Mrs. Meyer's on greasy stuff before and I noticed that hazy film too, but I think it's because the essential oils don't fully dissolve in water. That greasy residue you mention is basically cooked-on oil, and the extra scent oils just sit on top of that instead of cutting through it. Dawn works because they strip out all the extra stuff and focus on the surfactants.

My buddy Dave swore by Mrs. Meyer's for like two years, and I never said anything because he was so proud of it. One night we were cleaning up after a big brisket cook and he had this cast iron pan caked with grease. He put Mrs. Meyer's on half and some cheap store brand lemon soap on the other half. The cheap stuff cut through in like 15 seconds and the Meyer's stuff just sat there beading up on the surface. He got real quiet and then admitted the lemon soap smelled better too, which I thought was funny. He's back on Dawn now but he still keeps the Meyer's bottle out for guests who care about the fancy labels.
