Kid tested my dish soap logic at the grocery store and I froze

Was picking up a new bottle at Publix last Tuesday and this kid maybe 10 years old walks up and asks why I'm sniffing every single soap. I told him scent matters for doing dishes, and he goes 'but if they all clean the same why do you need a favorite?' That got me thinking - am I picking dish soap based on actual performance or just because I like how it smells? On one hand grease cutting is the whole point, but on the other hand if I hate the scent I'll avoid doing dishes. What do you guys think matters more when you grab a bottle off the shelf?

Stick with scent every time. I learned this the hard way after buying a lemony soap that smelled like furniture polish and it literally made me dread washing a single pan for a month. Scent sets the mood for the whole chore, if you hate it you'll put off dishes and let stuff crust up. Grease cutting power matters a lot but most brands at Publix or wherever are basically the same on that front. The real trick is finding a soap whose smell you actually enjoy and that still feels tough enough on tough messes. Dawn and Palmolive have pretty good balance there, just sniff till you find one that makes you almost want to wash stuff.

Honestly, that kid asks a legit question but here's the thing - scent absolutely matters and here's why. I picked up a bargain brand once because it was cheaper and it smelled like fake flowers mixed with chemicals, and I literally started hating the whole dishwashing routine. Tbh I found that Dawn's Apple scent or Gain's original dish soap smell make me actually want to do the dishes because the smell is comforting and familiar. Ngl though, you gotta find one that also cuts through grease, so what worked for me was sticking with Dawn but testing out their different scents till I found one that didn't remind me of a cleaning closet. So yeah, grab a few bottles and sniff them, and if a scent makes you feel good about washing up, that's way more important than some tiny difference in grease fighting.
