Finally got rid of the fish smell from last week's salmon dinner
I cooked salmon last Tuesday and even after running the dishwasher twice, my kitchen still smelled like a dock. I spent three days trying everything - baking soda, vinegar, leaving the window open in 40 degree weather. Nothing worked. Then my neighbor told me to try scrubbing the sink drain with a lemon wedge and salt. I did it yesterday morning and the smell was gone by noon. I have no idea why that works but it saved me from throwing out my dish sponge. Has anyone else had a weird smell that took forever to track down?

@oscarb77 yeah sponges basically just hold bacteria and I had to toss mine too.

Wait, have you ever tried that lemon and salt trick on a microwave? I had this weird burnt popcorn smell that just would not go away no matter how much I wiped it down. I ended up boiling a bowl of vinegar and water in there for like five minutes and then scrubbing the inside with a baking soda paste, and it finally cleared up. But that salmon smell sounds way worse, especially if it was sticking to your dish sponge. I swear sponges are like little smell traps that never fully dry out. Did you have to toss the sponge in the end, or did the lemon trick save that too?

The lemon and salt trick works because the acid cuts through the grease and the salt scrubs away the biofilm where the smell hides. I had a similar issue with a coffee maker that smelled like wet dog no matter how much I cleaned it. Turned out the water reservoir had that rubber seal thing that was holding onto the smell. I ended up soaking it in a baking soda paste for a few hours and then scrubbing the seal with an old toothbrush. The difference was night and day. Might be worth checking if your salmon smell is lingering in any rubber parts like the dishwasher gasket or the sink stopper instead of just the drain.
