The great butter vs margarine debate split my family in half at Thanksgiving

Last year my aunt brought her famous mashed potatoes but used margarine instead of butter. My uncle took one bite and called her out right at the table, saying you can't substitute real butter for that plastic stuff. She fired back that margarine is cheaper and lasts longer, and suddenly half the table was arguing about hydrogenated oils while the turkey got cold. Has anyone else had a cooking ingredient turn into a full family war?

Margarine's actually better for high heat cooking in my experience.

I tried that once with a cheap stick of margarine and it worked way better than butter for searing. The smoke point really does make a difference when you're blasting the heat. I remember I was making smash burgers and the butter kept burning on me. Switched to margarine and it held up way longer without smoking up the whole kitchen. Plus you don't get that greasy residue that butter leaves behind when it breaks apart.
