Found out 68% of digital artists never back up their work until something breaks

I was scrolling through a survey from ArtStation last week and saw this stat that stopped me cold. It said over two thirds of digital artists don't have a proper backup system in place until they lose a file or their hard drive dies. I thought I was bad about this stuff, but apparently I'm not alone. I asked a few friends in a Discord group and three out of four admitted they just save everything to one folder on their desktop. Has anyone here ever lost a big project and had to start over from scratch?

Gotta push back on that 68% number a little because I think it depends how you define "backup." A ton of people I know use cloud saves from CSP or Procreate and just assume that counts, which it kinda does until their subscription lapses or they run out of space. The real scary part is how few have a local external drive or a proper second copy somewhere else, which is the thing that actually saves you when your main computer dies.

Honestly yeah you're totally right. I used to think cloud saves were enough and never bothered with an external drive, but now I get that if the subscription runs out or the service goes down you're just screwed. Definitely rethinking my whole setup now haha.
