Old Detroit Diesel vs. the new electronic stuff...

Back in '98 I had to choose between getting a 6V92TA or a Series 60 for my rebuild. Picked the Series 60 because everyone said it was the future... and they weren't wrong. It's still running today in a Freightliner, pushing 850,000 miles with just one injector change. But man, I miss being able to fix the old mechanical stuff with just a wrench and a feeler gauge. The electronics save fuel but they sure don't make troubleshooting easy. Anyone else stick with older rigs or did you make the jump too?

Oh I gotta disagree a bit here (respectfully of course). I made the switch to electronic about 15 years ago and honestly I wouldn't go back. Sure the old mechanical stuff was simpler but it also needed way more frequent tinkering and parts were getting harder to find. The fuel savings alone paid for the upgrade in two years flat, and my electronic engine has been way more reliable in the long run. That broken-in feeling you get from a well-tuned mechanical is nice but I'll take the consistency of the new stuff any day.

Fair enough, @julia_carter70, I get where you're coming from.
