Heard a young guy at the shop say diesel engines are dying out

I was getting parts yesterday and overheard this kid, maybe 25, telling his friend that diesel is on the way out because of electric trucks. He said within 10 years nobody will work on a diesel engine. I just shook my head and walked away. But it got me thinking - I do see more electric vans around town now. Has anyone else noticed a real drop in diesel work at their shop lately, or is that just city talk?

People have been predicting the death of diesel for at least 15 years now and it hasn't happened yet. Sure you see more electric vans but look at any construction site or farm and it's all diesel. I'll believe it's dying when parts for a 7.3 Powerstroke get hard to find.

Totally agree with you @luna891. My uncle still runs a 12 valve Cummins on his farm and it's not going anywhere. Parts for the old mechanical diesels are everywhere and they're not hard to find at all. I think the death of diesel gets exaggerated because people in cities see different stuff than what the rest of the country is still doing.
