We were sitting outside when my neighbor came over and mentioned my old swimming fail. Most people would cringe, but it got everyone laughing and talking. Why is the default to see these moments as purely bad?

Funny how social anxiety makes you think any old story will ruin the mood. For years I'd tense up if someone brought up an old photo or a dumb thing I said. But watching my friend own her karaoke fail last week, how it got the whole group telling their own stories, totally flipped that for me. It's like those moments aren't walls, they're doors. Everyone has them, and sharing them just sort of builds a bridge. Maybe the awkward part is trying to hide it.
