Hot take: Dating apps killed the art of the awkward first date story

Back in 2008, I went on a blind date my friend set up. Guy showed up 40 minutes late, had spinach in his teeth, and spent the whole dinner talking about his pet iguana. It was a disaster but it made a hilarious story. Now with apps, you screen people so hard before meeting that the bad dates are boring. Like when’s the last time someone told you about a truly cringey date that wasn’t just a guy being weird over text? Has anyone else noticed the quality of disaster stories going downhill?

My buddy went on an app date last month where the girl showed up, said he looked shorter than his pics, then spent the whole time showing him vacation pics of her cat. Not even a good story tbh, just sad.

Not even a good story tbh, just sad" is exactly right, @josephl67. That's the problem now, it's all just... sad or boring. My friend went on a Tinder date where the guy showed up high, spent twenty minutes explaining crypto to her with a napkin drawing, and then realized he left his wallet at home. She had to pay for his dinner. It's awkward but not even fun awkward, just like... why did we both show up? Nobody walks away from that going "remember that time the iguana guy"?
