Went to the DMV today and they changed the line system again

I showed up at 8am to the Santa Monica DMV and they had this new ticket system where you scan a QR code instead of pulling a number. Nobody knew how to use it and the workers just stood there watching people struggle for 20 minutes. By the time I got helped it was 10:30 and my number was C47. I swear they change things just to make it harder on purpose. Anyone else deal with that new system yet?

Holley, you said "I used to think QR codes were just a gimmick" and I get that, but the thing about the coffee shop menu scans is actually pretty simple. When you scan a QR code, it just opens a webpage, so the wait time being different is probably just the menu page updating itself each time you load it. It's not secretly tracking you like some people think. The DMV's new system is just a QR code that gives you a ticket number on your phone instead of paper, but the real problem is nobody trained the staff on how to explain it. The workers standing around watching people struggle is the real issue, not the code itself. They could probably fix the whole thing by putting up a sign with two steps on it.

Bet the QR code tracks how long you wait.

Oh wow, you know what, I actually used to think QR codes were just a gimmick. Like why bother scanning when you can just type a link yourself. But this comment totally clicked for me. I was at a coffee shop last week and they had a QR code for the menu, and I swear every time I scanned it the wait time on the screen was different than what I actually experienced. That's creepy if that's what they're doing. I mean I get it for business reasons but still feels invasive.
