Told a pun at a funeral and got death stares

Went to my uncle's memorial last month in Des Moines. He was a huge gardener so I said 'at least he's pushing up daisies now.' Nobody laughed. My cousin whispered that was disrespectful. Has anyone else had a joke bomb that bad at a family event?

Told a joke about my uncle's bad cooking at a funeral potluck. Said his famous chili was so spicy it'd wake the dead. My aunt didn't speak to me for six months. Learned real quick that timing is everything.

Told a similar joke at my grandpa's funeral, @phoenix29. Jokes don't bury well.

Figure I gotta push back a little here @phoenix29. Funerals are tough, yeah, but sometimes a little laughter is exactly what people need to break through all that heavy silence. I've seen it myself where a well-timed joke actually helps folks remember the person for who they really were, not just the sad stuff. Your aunt probably just needed more time to process, that's all. The chili joke sounds perfect for the right crowd, just gotta watch the room a bit more.
