Thought my dad jokes were killing it at work until my 9 year old asked why nobody laughs at the water cooler
I've been dropping dad jokes at the office for about 8 months now, and I honestly thought I was the funny guy. Every Monday I'd hit the break room with something like 'why did the coffee file a police report, it got mugged' and people would just kind of smile and walk away. Last Thursday my daughter was at the office with me for take your kid to work day and heard me do the one about the scarecrow winning an award because he was out standing in his field. She looked up at me and said 'dad, why does everyone do that fake laugh and check their phone after you talk.' That one hit me right in the gut and I've been replaying every joke since. So now I'm wondering, is there a way to know if you're actually funny or if coworkers are just being polite, or do I need to just quit while I'm behind?
Hold up, the water cooler thing isn't really the test you want. People laugh way harder at stuff when they're actually listening, and standing around a water cooler is basically the worst place to get a real reaction because half of them are just grabbing water and thinking about their next meeting. The real sign is whether people repeat your jokes later to someone else, or throw one back at you, because that means it stuck. Also your kid calling out the fake laugh doesn't mean you're not funny, it just means office jokes land different than jokes at home where everyone actually wants to hear you. Try testing new stuff on your family first and save the winners for work, that's how you find out what actually works.
