The grocery store checkout line is no place for a 10 minute pun setup

Last Tuesday at the Kroger in Austin, I spent a solid 5 minutes setting up a pun about bananas and potassium for the cashier. She just scanned my grapes and said 'have a nice day' without even reacting. That's when I realized the problem isn't the joke, it's the timing and the audience. A busy checkout line with 4 people behind you is not the place for a slow burn. If you're going to tell a pun, save it for the produce section when the person is stocking and has time to laugh. Has anyone else figured out the right setting for their jokes, or am I just overthinking this?
