I used to be the guy who laughed at my own bad jokes, now I just mumble them to the dog

Back in 2018 at my cousin's wedding in Cleveland, I told a pun about a sheep that got a standing ovation from like 4 people and me, then the silence hit. Now I'll test a joke on my regulars at the shop, and if two of them don't crack a smile, I bury it. I guess I got tired of the awkward stares after that one time the pastor heard my 'why did the chicken cross the road' punchline about a divorce lawyer. Has anyone else just started rehearsing their jokes in the mirror to avoid that heavy pause?
