Why is everyone so obsessed with 2FA apps?

I don't get the push to use those authenticator apps when a simple hardware key does the same job without the phone dependency. Last month my coworker got locked out of his bank because his phone died mid-trip, has anyone else dealt with that hassle?

Funny you mention that, my buddy Dave had the exact same thing happen with his work email... phone took a swim in a lake and he was stuck for two days. He kept saying how a little USB key in his pocket would've solved everything, but the company wouldn't budge on the app.
