Spent $60 on a hardware security key and it stopped a weird login attempt from a coffee shop in Boise.
Got a notification on my phone about a login try from some random cafe I've never been to, but the key wasn't plugged in so it just blocked it cold, which was a huge relief lol.

But what about when it's not just a bot? @danielmason is right that most are, but a key stops the real person who gets your password from a data leak. They can't fake having the physical thing in their hand, even if they know all your words.

Honestly, that sounds like overkill. Most of those login attempts are just bots scanning for weak passwords, not a targeted attack. A good password manager with a strong, unique password would have probably done the same thing for free.

Yeah, "overkill" until it's your bank account getting emptied by a bot that got lucky.
