Rant: I used to roll my eyes at writing prompts until one fixed my boring opening

My first page felt flat, but a prompt about a secret under the floorboards made it click, have you ever had a prompt jump-start your writing?

Prompts never did much for me. They often box me into a idea I don't care about. Like once I tried a prompt about a lost key, but my story wanted to be about a family argument. I spent more time fighting the prompt than writing. For some, prompts spark ideas, but for me they just get in the way. I find it better to just start writing messy and fix it later.

Maybe just bend prompts to fit your story instead.

Hannah's "start writing messy" approach sounds freeing! It reminds me of a time I used a prompt about a locked door. I meant to write a mystery, but it turned into a memory about my grandma's kitchen and the smell of cookies. Now I see prompts as jumping-off points, not rules.
