At our last meetup, we split on prompts based on real places versus made-up worlds. Can't decide which approach is better.

Consider how much creative energy you want to spend on world-building versus story-building. Real places give you a free, detailed setting so you can focus all your effort on characters and plot. Made-up worlds force you to invent every single rule and landmark from scratch, which is fun but exhausting. You're basically choosing between using a pre-made canvas or building your own from lumber and nails.

Your point about made-up worlds being exhausting hits home, @aaronj43. Once tried to craft a whole fantasy realm for a story and burned out after naming the third river.

My buddy tried that 'lumber and nails' approach and quit after mapping three forests.
