That guy who warned me about leaving dishes in the sink overnight
My new roomie Mark swore any food scraps in the sink after midnight would attract cockroaches and sure enough we woke up to three of them crawling on the counter after I left a plate with spaghetti sauce for just one night, has anyone else had a roommate's weird rule turn out to be totally right?

@rowanellis cockroaches don't need much. A little sauce or a single crumb is a feast to them. Also, they can squeeze through gaps way smaller than you'd think, so ignoring any crumb is risky.

Dude I gotta admit I used to think my old roommate Kevin was just being paranoid about the toaster crumbs. He said if you don't clean out the crumb tray after every use, you'll get little ants marching across the counter. I laughed at him and called him a neat freak. Then I left my toaster unchecked for like a week and bam, a whole line of tiny sugar ants came crawling out of the slot one morning. It was disgusting and he was totally right. So yeah, I feel you on the spaghetti sauce thing. Those cockroaches are no joke.

Wait are you telling me cockroaches can set up shop on just spilled spaghetti sauce left out overnight? I left a half-eaten bowl of chili in the sink once and woke up to find like five of them just chilling on the rim, licking the bowl clean like it was their own personal buffet. My buddy Tom told me they'll actually slurp down anything with protein in it, even tiny bits of meat or cheese you didn't even see fall behind the counter. Makes me wonder what else is living in all the little cracks I never look at.
