My last roommate used my cast iron pan to cook fish and then left it in the sink overnight

I used to be super chill about sharing kitchen stuff with roommates, but that changed after I lived with this guy Kevin in Austin. He ruined my Lodge skillet that I'd had since 2018 by soaking it with soap, and then tried to say it was fine. Now I keep all my good pans locked in my room and only use cheap ones for communal cooking. Has anyone else had to hide their cookware from a roommate?

Dude, why would anyone soak a cast iron pan overnight? That's just basic kitchen survival. I'm with you, I had a roommate who used my carbon steel wok to boil pasta and then scrubbed it with steel wool. The rust spots are still there. I've learned my lesson too - my good stuff stays in my closet under a pile of towels now. Some people just don't get that certain pans need special care. I feel your pain with that Lodge.

Hearing @valw36 mention steel wool on a carbon steel wok actually made me wince out loud. That's a special kind of kitchen crime right there. I feel like some people see "scrub harder" as the solution to everything and it breaks my heart. I've locked away my cast iron and my carbon steel pan now. It sounds extreme but it saved me a lot of anger and replacement costs. How many pans did you lose before you went full security mode?
