My brother's 'snoop once' advice ruined 4 months of roommate peace

My older brother told me to just check my roommate's room once when he was gone, said it would settle everything. I did it last Tuesday and found a literal trash pile behind his door, like 30 empty energy drink cans and takeout boxes. Confronted him about it and now he barely talks to me, but the common area smells way better. Maybe it's just me, but I think some mysteries are better left alone. Has anyone else tried the snoop method and gotten burned?

Funny how we think finding the dirt will make things cleaner, but it just moves the mess somewhere else. I've noticed this everywhere, not just with roommates. People dig through a partner's phone and then get mad about what they see, or they read a friend's group chat and suddenly every joke feels like a jab. The snoop never solves the actual problem, it just gives you a new, sharper one to hold onto. You traded a bad smell for a sour mood, and honestly a trash pile behind a door is easier to ignore than the look on his face every time you walk past. Next time, just let the mystery stay in the closet.
