Guy on my site said he skips the load chart on short picks, that's how people die
I was grabbing lunch at the food truck near the Riverfront job in Cincinnati when I heard an operator say he never checks the chart for anything under 5 tons because 'the computer handles it.' I didn't say anything then but it stuck with me all week. Load moment indicators can be off or overridden, and a 4,800 pound pick at 60 feet of radius will flip you just as fast as a big one. We had a near miss on our site 3 weeks ago when a guy boomed out too far on a 'light' panel lift. Curious if your company does a chart review on every pick or just the heavy ones.
Reminds me of a guy I worked with years back who swore he could feel when a pick was too heavy by the way the truck leaned. He was dead serious about it too. Ran a little boom truck for a sign company and never once pulled out the chart on a "quick" set. Anyway he ended up putting one in the dirt, no one hurt but the sign was junk. Point is these shortcuts always work right up until they don't. Your near miss on that panel lift is proof enough. A 4,800 pound pick at 60 feet does not care how you feel about it.
