I finally switched to air-drying curly cuts after years of diffusing

Honestly, I was a die-hard diffuser fan for like 5 years. I thought you had to use heat to get any volume or definition on curly hair. But then I took a class with this stylist in Denver who showed me a before-and-after on her own head after 8 months of only air-drying. The difference was wild. Her curls were way less frizzy and had this uniform bounce that diffusing never gave her. She said the heat was disrupting her curl pattern over time. So I tried it on a client with 3B curls last week. I just plopped her hair with a microfiber towel, added a light gel, and let it air dry for 2 hours. The results were smoother than anything I got with my diffuser. The client even texted me later that her curls lasted 3 days instead of the usual 1. Has anyone else had a similar shift in their drying technique for curl clients?

Wait, did you find the gel was the key too? I tried the same thing with a client who has super tight 4A curls and just scrunched in a leave-in with no gel - it was a frizz bomb. Once I added a lightweight gel and let it dry completely before scrunching the crunch, her curls held for four whole days. That Denver stylist was right about the heat thing too.

That thing about heat disrupting curl patterns over time is wild. My friend Laura swore by her diffuser for years, then she went on vacation and had to air-dry for a week. She said her curls looked better by day 4 than they ever did with heat. She never went back to diffusing after that.
