How I stopped burning my clients with hot tools

I used to just crank my flat iron to the highest setting and go, thinking hotter meant faster and better results. Then about 6 months ago a client with super fine hair started complaining about breakage and I finally tested my tool with a heat gauge. Turns out I was running at 450 degrees when 350 was plenty. Now I actually match the heat to the hair type and my work looks so much healthier. Anybody else have a tool habit they had to unlearn?

Measuring the temp was a game changer for me too. I used to think 410 was the magic number for everything, but now I never go above 370 on fine hair and it makes a huge difference in shine. Also made me realize how much slower I was going with the iron, so I focused on smaller sections at lower heat instead.

Totally feel you on that. I had the exact same wake up call with mine, low heat and small sections is where it's at.
