I finally picked canned tomatoes over fresh for my chili last night

Tbh I always thought fresh tomatoes were better for chili, but my fridge only had a can of diced tomatoes left. I tossed them in with some leftover ground beef from Tuesday and a half-used onion. Honestly, the texture was way better and it saved me a trip to the store in Denver traffic. Has anyone else found canned stuff works better for slow-cooked meals?

Yeah but I feel like fresh tomatoes bring a brightness that canned stuff just cant match, especially if you let them break down long enough. The texture thing is real though, canned tomatoes hold up way better without turning into complete mush after hours of simmering. Guess it depends on whether you want that fresh acidic kick or a more uniform chili texture.

Ngl, I feel like this is getting way too deep for chili. It's just tomatoes, right? I mean, @west.anna makes a good point about fresh vs canned, but at the end of the day it's still gonna be chili and people will eat it either way.
