Why does nobody talk about how rice cookers can betray you?
I got one of those fancy 3-cup rice cookers for my birthday and tried making jasmine rice last Tuesday in Portland. Followed the little lines inside the pot exactly, but it came out like a sticky brick that even my dog turned his nose up at. Turns out I forgot to rinse the rice first, and the starch just glued everything together. Has anyone else found that the instruction manual leaves out the important steps, or did I just get a dud model?
Step one is just rinse the rice until the water runs clear and then use the right water ratio, and people skip both because they think it doesn't matter. It totally matters. Too much water and you get mush, not enough and you get crunchy rice, and the cooker can't fix either one after the fact. It just sits there doing its job while you blame it for your mistakes. The pot isn't mad at you, it's just disappointed.
